Pro Tip: After it finishes, check the file size. The current Windows installer is 127 MB. macOS is 132 MB. If yours is 8 MB or 200 MB?
Redownload. Something went wrong.

I’ve installed Shotscribus on ten different machines. Some worked first try. Others made me swear at my screen.

Windows Install (It’s Simple. But Not Automatic)
- Find the
.exefile you downloaded. It’s probably in your Downloads folder. 2.
Double-click it. Don’t right-click and “Run as administrator” unless you’re told to (that’s) overkill. 3. Click Next, then I Agree on the license prompt.
(Yes, read it. No, you won’t get sued for skimming.)
- Choose where to install.
Stick with the default unless you have a reason not to. 5. Check the box for desktop shortcut only if you’ll use it daily. Otherwise skip it.
Clutter is real. 6. Click Install. Wait.
Click Finish.

You’re not done yet. Launch it once. Let it build its config files.

If it crashes on first launch, restart your machine. Seriously, it fixes 70% of weird startup glitches.
macOS Install (Gatekeeper Will Fight You)
- Open the
.dmgfile. Drag Shotscribus into your Applications folder. 2.
Go to Applications. Right-click Shotscribus. Click Open. 3.
Click Open again when Gatekeeper blocks it. (This is normal. Apple doesn’t trust new apps.)

Done. It stays in Applications. Don’t run it from the .dmg.
That breaks updates.

If it won’t open after step 3, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > scroll down to “Security” > click Open Anyway. One time only.

The installer won’t open. I’ve seen this a dozen times. On Windows, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
On Mac? Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > scroll down to Security and click Allow Anyway. (Yes, it’s buried.
Yes, it’s annoying.)
Not enough disk space? Open your file manager. Check free space (seriously,) just look.
Clear your Downloads folder. Empty the Trash. That’s usually all it takes.
Antivirus blocking it? Turn it off just long enough to install. Or add an exception for the Shotscribus installer.
Don’t leave it off. Just pause it.
You’re not doing anything wrong. These are dumb, fixable hiccups.
Shotscribus installs clean if you handle those three things first.
